Dead Sea Ultra Marathon (April
11th,2003)
The run begins at 6:30 am from the southern entrance of Amman the capital of Jordan. At this point the altitude is 900m above sea level and the temperature is cool (average 15 C). Heading south the road is slightly hilly for around 12 km, until the edge of the plateau is reached. Here, we face west and the downhill begins. Every few hundred meters mark a rise in temperature and a decline in altitude. This stretch lasts for approximately 20 km and ends at an altitude close to 400m below sea level with drastically higher temperature (average 32 C). By now 32km have been completed encompassing an altitude change of 1300m. The remaining 21 km stretch is fairly flat with slight inclines on the last 2 km as the seaside hills are reached. If luck prevails the weather will be ideal. On the other hand, it could be raining in Amman while a heat wave is sweeping the valley (temperature could peak in the 40 C). The entire course is on paved road; there is no shade at all. The Scenery however, takes your breath away (no pun intended). The race is split into four categories: Ultra marathon (50 km), marathon (42km), half-marathon (21 km), and relay, which is only allowed for the 50 km category. Relay teams can have a minimum of two or a maximum of four runners. Age
